The Shennongjia Ecological Tourism Area is located in Shennongjia Forestry District, Hubei Province. As a national 5A-level tourist attraction, UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, Global Geopark, and UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve, it covers 3,253 square kilometers with an average elevation of 1,700 meters. Its highest peak, Shennongding, reaches 3,106.2 meters, known as the "Roof of Central China". Renowned for pristine forest ecosystems, rich biodiversity, and mysterious Shennong culture, it's the only primeval forest area along the 31°N latitude.

History and Culture

Named after Emperor Yan Shennong who gathered herbs here 5,000 years ago, Shennongjia is not only where Shennong tasted hundreds of herbs but also a cradle of Chu culture. The area preserves numerous legends and relics about Shennong, like Shennong Altar and Shennong Valley.

Since the 20th century, Shennongjia gained global fame for "Wild Man" legends, becoming a hotspot for scientists exploring unknown species. In 2016, it was inscribed on the World Heritage List, becoming China's first site to receive UNESCO's triple honors of World Natural Heritage, Global Geopark, and Biosphere Reserve.
